More plaudits for shared space
Plaudits and prizes continue to come in for Ashford’s shared
space scheme.
The pioneering scheme has scooped a top national award for town
regeneration and local and regional media have heralded the new
road system after it marked its first anniversary without a single
person being injured. Average traffic speeds have also been
cut.
The scheme picked up the award at the prestigious Royal Town
Planning Institute ceremony in London’s Hilton Hotel, Park
Lane.
Meanwhile positive media headlines have included ‘Ashford’s
shared streets hailed a success‘ - BBC, ‘Shared space the way
forward for other towns’ - Kentish Express, ‘Shared space staying
safe’ – Ashford Herald while Radio Kent covered the scheme’s
success during their breakfast and morning shows over
Christmas.
Ashford shared space has now won nine awards for regeneration,
innovation, street design, landscaping and for the best ‘public
realm’.
Speeds have also been slashed – from 85% of drivers travelling
at 30mph 12 months ago to an average of just 21.5mph now.
